Any physical or mental impairment that is identified at birth or as a result of sickness or injury is referred to as a disability. Some of them are lifelong, while others may be short-lived. In physical, it limits the ability to move while mental disabilities impair cognitive functioning and can affect things like memory and learning.

Living with a disability is challenging yet fulfilling. Their needs can fluctuate throughout their lives and can involve emotional, social and economic problems. Accommodations or tools designed to increase independence and bridge the gap for people with disabilities are not always available or easy to obtain. When disabled people lack independence or feel that they cannot live fully, problems can arise. They may also experience financial instability as a result of their physical or mental limitations.

Effect on the family

Caring for a disabled person can be extremely difficult. Families struggle to provide the needed attention and support system without limiting freedom and independence. Emotional, social, and financial problems are common for those caring for a disabled family member.

Effect on society

While there are laws to protect the rights of people with disabilities in our society, many people feel uncomfortable around a person with a disability.

Society must work on equal treatment for people who have disabilities. The social support of people with disabilities and their families is essential to prevent some of the negative outcomes we discuss. Disabled people must be able to set the tone for how much or how little they feel able to do, and society must follow suit. Individuals, schools and businesses must strive to accommodate the needs of disabled people to promote their full participation in life and society.

Ways to help NDIS Participants

People with disabilities must enjoy their rights and good well-being in all areas of society. They tend to have more difficulties in their day to day life, in basic aspects such as access to the world of work, to education and there are usually economic barriers in between.

Taking into account that the entire society does not depend on ourselves, as citizens we have other resources in our hands to be able to collaborate in making the integration of people with disabilities.

  • Provide your help only when necessary and positive action, avoid overprotection and help the person feel valid for themselves if possible.

  • Naturalness is the key, avoid behaviours or phrases that make the person feel different.

  • Listen to them and ask for their opinion. Having a disability does not make opinions and comments more or less valid.

  • Make them participate in what you are doing, paint a wall, play in the park, take a walk, and dance.

  • Enjoy their company. Share your time with them and enjoy every moment.

Life with a disability presents unique challenges for the individual, family, friends, and society. Society must work to educate the public about disabilities, provide social support to people with disabilities and their families, and eliminate discrimination.
